Rare and Scarce: Ot Emet. Salonika, 1565. First Edition. Glosses
Sefer Ot Emet - glosses and references to midrashic literature and the Yalkut, and glosses on the siddur, by Rabbi Meir Benveniste. Salonika, Yosef ben Yitzchak Ya'avetz Press, 1565. First edition. Very rare sefer; a precious find offered only a few times at auction.
Unique work. The author refers to himself as "HaMegihah" - the proofreader who reviewed all the midrashic literature printed for the first time not long before. He proofread and revised over 10,000 glosses and references. "Seder Kedushah" appears on the last leaves - errata from the prayer arrangements in the Venice 1649 printing, revised according to the Talmud and the poskim and the commentators, with glosses copied from the siddur of Rabbi Shlomo Alkabetz, composer of "Lecha Dodi."
The first leaves of the sefer bear several signatures in Oriental script. Likewise, glosses are written on the margins of the leaves, also in Oriental script. The identity of the signatories and the content of the glosses have not been examined.
One of the earliest and rarest Salonika sefarim.
182 leaf, 20 cm.
Moderate condition. Aging stains. Worming perforations. Reinforcements on the margins of some of the leaves. Reinforcement in the corners of the title page, far from the text. Old and imprinted professional leather binding.
