Untitled, 2018

A painting that is no less than an Israeli masterpiece by the artist Tamar Simon, one of the best artist in Israel. In the work a self-portrait of the artist as a man with a braid and a red dress. Notice the multiplicity of hands in the work in addition to the multiplicity of visible and hidden figures. One of the most fascinating and mysterious artists in the Israeli art market. Museum-level work.

Paintings and drawings are the tools by which marking deals with the tension between the individual and the public, as well as the beauty and violence that result from this tension.
The materials and tools she uses are taken from their low sources and placed in the center of the viewer's gaze through concentrated artistic action. Portrait painting is a central tool through which she tries to give contemporary form and meaning to this traditional craft. The recent projects created by Simon focus on the multiplicity of individual portraits. She uses live models, photographs she takes herself and photographed images she collects, mostly of African refugees. The portraits express feelings of alienation and fear, as well as the tension that exists between the broken and the alienated to pay. These are the same emotions that motivate Simon herself as she encounters her sources of inspiration for painting: images of refugees now disembarked from the ship, Shakespearean figures from old plays, self-portraits, and classic paintings from art history. Hence also her need to paint each character in the way she experiences it.
