לקראת הבחירות לכנסת הראשונה, התאגדו המפלגות הדתיות לחזית אחת תחת השם 'חזית דתית מאוחדת' במסגרתה התמודדו כל חברי הסיעות הדתיות בכנסת, מסיעות: המזרחי, הפועל המזרחי, אגודת ישראל, פועלי אגודת ישראל ואיחוד דתי בלתי מפלגתי. והיוו נציגות לתושבי מדינת ישראל הדתיים מחוגי המזרחי ואגודת ישראל כאחד. כהונת הכנסת הראשונה נמשכה למשך כשנתיים, ולמעשה זו הייתה הפעם היחידה בהיסטוריה של מדינת ישראל בה פעלו יחד כל חוגי הדתיים במדינת ישראל, תחת אותה המסגרת.

בכנסת זו עמדו שאלות הרות גורל על שאלת עתידה של מדינת ישראל, בתחומי שמירת השבת, חינוך הבנים והבנות בדרך המסורה חוקת המדינה, שאלת גיוס הבנים והבנות ועוד ועוד.
