Rabbi Sasson bar Mordechai Shendoch [1747-1830], was also known as Chacham Sasson Ajami or by the acronym of his name, Rasha"m. He was one of the sages of Iraq, rabbi, artist, poet and composer. Chacham Sasson Shendoch was accepted and admired also by the the non-Jews of Baghdad. His title 'Ajami' (Persian) was given to him after he healed the son of one of the Arab ministers of Baghdad. As a sign of gratitude, he was given striped expensive Persian-style clothing. He wrote many liturgical poems, some of which are still sung by communities of Iraqi Jews.
