Large Poster Announcing a Raffle for the Assistance of the New Jewish Settlements in Birobidzhan. Moscow, 1929
Large poster published by OZET (ОЗЕТ Общество землеустройства еврейских трудящихся) about a raffle with the goal of helping finance the new Jewish settlement in the Birobidzhan region. Raffle prizes included: a three-room apartment, 2 trips to the United States (!), American bonds, and more.
OZET was a Jewish organization which was among the most influential Jewish organization in the USSR of the 1930s (at its peak, it numbered about half a million members!). The organization established many Jewish agricultural settlements on the Crimean peninsula during the 1920s, however, towards the end of that decade, there was not enough land there, as is written on this announcement. So the organization decided to encourage Jewish settlement in the eastern part of the continent, in the Birobidzhan region. The organization held a raffle In the framework of these efforts, as related by this poster.
