Large Collection of [Approximately 90] Receipts and Thank-You Letters for Donations by Mordechai Buxbaum. Jerusalem, 20th Century.
Mordechai Buxbaum (1898-1959) was Charedi Jurist and public figure. He was an assistant to Béla Kun, a Communist leader in Hungary. Afterwards, he studied with his uncle, Rabbi Yehoshua Buxbaum in Galanta. He immigrated to the Land of Israel and settled in the Old City where he became close to rabbinic leaders and public figures in Jerusalem, including Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, Rabbi Yosef Tzvi Dushinsky, Dr. Moshe Wallach and others, as well as non-Jewish dignitaries in the city. He served as legal counsel to Agudat Yisrael and the deputy mayor of Jerusalem. His son Rabbi Yosef established Machon Yerushalayim.
From this collection, we learn that he was a man of great kindness. Many of the donations were to institutions, some for charitable causes in organizations, and some were assistance for private individuals. Handwritten by him: "On ... day I received half a pound for the assistance of a widow." Some of the letters are his dealing with estates, as he was a lawyer who dealt the wills of the departed who left their assets to charity.
Various sizes. Fine condition. Some of the letters and receipts are printed and some are handwritten.
The collection has not been thoroughly examined.
