Eddie Cantor 1892-1964 was a Jewish-American singer, comic, dancer, actor and songwriter. He was known to audiences from Broadway, radio and television in its early days as "Banjo Eyes."
 
Cantor was born Edward Israel Itzkowitz in New York, USA, to immigrants from Russia. He started working with Hadassah, then a small Zionist organization, in the 1930s to build support for Jews fleeing Europe to Palestine. Cantor made several major speeches condemning anti-Semitism and spoke out about the dangers of fascism and Nazism before the United States’ entered WWII in 1941.
