Collection of [7] Vouchers from the Lodz Ghetto
7 different vouchers Jews used in the Lodz ghetto, including edicts distributed to parents notifying them of the beginning of the school year, vouchers for milk, and more.
In contrast to other ghettos where the consumption of food and basic goods was based on smuggling from outside the ghetto, in Lodz this was impossible due to the strictness of the German authorities. The Jews were completely dependent on the German authorities and the Judenrat for everything related to food, medicine and other essential goods. As a result, starvation and disease were rampant in the ghetto.
Approximately 164,000 people were required to crowd into an area of four square kilometers, of which only 2.4 were habitable. The Nazis liquidated the ghetto in its entirety in 1944.
