The Holy Land 1910-1920. Magnificent Photo Album. Jerusalem, 1921

The Holy Land 1910-1920 - magnificent, unusual photo album, hand-bound. Includes 24 spectacular photographs taken by Jewish-Russian photographers Sonia and Shlomo Narinsky between the years 1910-1920. Published by Jamal Brothers.

Among the photographs: The Tower of David, a shepherd and his flock, Chizkiyahu's pool, a view of the mountains around the Sea of Galilee, water-carriers on the Temple Mount (the Mosque of Omar), Aharon Aaronson - leader of the underground spy ring NYL"Y, a Bedouin girl, Haifa at the foothills of Mount Carmel, Rachel's Tomb, a rabbi and his disciple in Ashkenazic-Jerusalemite traditional dress, and much more. The photographs were printed in the Photogauvre style. Each postcard is stuck onto bristol board, embossed-stamped and protected with tissue paper.

Shlomo Narinsky [1885-1960] was known for his unique photographs depicting the Land of Israel as the Holy Land, a storyteller of Bible stories. The use Narinsky makes of light and shadow gives the views a soft, romantic touch, as if taken from fairy tales. Shlomo Narinsky would say, "Each picture of mine is a prayer." His wife Sonia managed to photograph Arab women without veils, which could not have been photographed by male photographers. In 1940 he was caught by the Nazis and interred in concentration camps. In 1944 he was exchanged by the British in a prisoner swap for a German spy from the Land of Israel.

[24] photo leaves protected with tissue-paper. 28 cm.
