Historic Discovery: Letter from Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh of Modena, to HaRav HaMusmach Rabbi Avraham Laniado, Av Beit Din of Aleppo, Son and Successor of the Kli Yakar - Rare letter between two sages of the generation: Unknown letter from the mighty gaon Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh of Modena, chief rabbi of Venice and one of the leading rabbis of Italy. The letter was sent to Aleppo, to ”HaRav HaMusmach” Rabbi Avraham Laniado, son of the mighty gaon Rabbi Shmuel Laniado, author of Kli Yakar , Kli Paz , and more, and one of the progenitors of the dynasty that continues to this day. Oriental-style scribal script, with a signature by Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh of Modena. Venice, 1630s. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a letter from the wondrous gaon Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh of Modena has ever been offered at auction! This letter deals with an interesting case that reveals a small glimpse into the lives of rabbis and merchants, as follows: The brothers Rabbi Yitzchak and Rabbi Ya'akov Attias owed a sum of money to R' Ya'akov Franko.  Close to that time, Rabbi Ya'akov Adarkon travelled from Venice to Aleppo, and transferred a sum of money to the gvir  Rabbi Raphael ibn Yakar. The creditor, Rabbi Ya'akov Franko, was convinced that this money was from the debtor, Rabbi Ya'akov Attias, who sent it anonymously so that the money would not be taken by his creditor. This created the need to clarify with the messenger and the recipient of the funds whether the funds transferred to the  gvir  came from the Atias brothers - because if that was the case, he would seize the money to pay off the debt - or if it was his own money, with no connection to the Attias rabbis and Franko. In his letter, Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh asked the addressee to take upon himself to exert his influence on the matter, and excommunicate those involved until the matter was resolved as to the source of the funds. Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh's signature appears at the end of the letter (lacking the end):  sad and distressed, Yehudah Ary[eh of Modena] .” This is an important historic discovery  - letters from Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh are very rare and with significant Torah and research value. This letter is completely unknown and has never been printed. It also reveals an as-yet-unknown personal connection between Italian rabbis and one of the leading sages of Oriental countries.
