Sar HaTorah Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky's Personal Copy of Sha'arei Teshuvah, Used for 36 Years - Question: What mussar work should be studied in yeshivah? Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky's reply: Rabbeinu Yonah ( Sha'arei Teshuvah )! Personal copy of this sefer mussar which previously belonged to the gadol hador Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, Sefer Sha'arei Teshuvah by Rabbeinu Yonah of Gerondi. It is printed together with Sefer Ohr Chadash by Reb Chaim's uncle, the gaon Rabbi Moshe Karelitz of Vilna. Bnei Brak edition, 1986. Rabbi Chaim's signature appears at the top of the title page, conspicuous for its modesty: ”from the library of Chaim Kanievsky.” This itself is already an unmatched study in mussar - how this gadol hador , hidden in his home studying Torah day and night in a manner unparalleled even in previous generations, to the extent that it can even be said ”the yetzer hara left him” - still feels the need to study Sha'arei Teshuvah . The sefer describes the stages of repentance a sinner must undertake: regret, abandoning the sin, breaking one's desire, etc, ! It is simply unbelievable. If only our mitzvahs would be as pure as the sins the gaon Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky must repent for ... Sefer Sha'arei Teshuvah was very important to Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky; it is cited dozens of times in his sefarim . There is also the famous recording in which Reb Chaim instructs one of the the rashei yeshivah , telling him that Sefer Sha'arei Teshuvah is the preferred sefer to study during a yeshivah's mussar session. As can be seen in this personal copy of his, he did not simply recommend it for yeshivah students, he was also particular to study Sefer Sha'arei Teshuvah himself (refer to the attached photograph from late in Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky's life, depicting him studying sefer Sha'arei Teshuvah at a gathering). This copy was apparently especially beloved to the gaon Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, as is evident from Reb Chaim's library serial number, sefer no. 80 (!) out of thousands of sefarim which, as many recall, covered all the walls of the house on Rashba”m Street [the sticker is still on the sefer 's spine]. The reason for Reb Chaim's special appreciation for this edition is the important addition printed in the margins of the pages in this edition - the Ohr Chadash commentary by the gaon Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky's uncle (his mother's brother), Rabbi Moshe. The Chazon Ish called Rabbi Moshe ”The King of Suffering” because he suffered like Iyov his entire life, yet this did not interfere one bit from his Divine service. Not for nothing was this edition so beloved to Reb Chaim, as its purpose was the gadol b'Yisrael 's favorite hobby, as printed in the sefer : ” Ohr HaChadash HaShalem is a reference for all the sayings of the Sages that Rabbeinu [Yonah] brought in this sefer , Bavli, Yerushalmi, Sifra, Sifri, Michilta and Midrashim” - which as we know was the gaon Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky's favorite pastime - to find the source in Chaza”l for each and every statement, as is well-known. Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the gaon Rabbi Shmaryahu Yosef Chaim Kanievsky . 192; [1], 17 pp. 21 cm. Sefer HaYirah by Rabbeinu Yonah is printed at the end, with a dedicated title page. Fine condition. Tear in the margins of the first leaf, without damage or lack.
