”Kuntress Kiddush Hashem” - Touching Responsum from the Av Beit Din of Bonyhád, the Gaon Rabbi Aharon Pressburger, During the Holocaust - ”They sinned doubly, they were beaten doubly, and they were consoled doubly ... The consolation that Hashem will give us will be to redeem us soon ” (the manuscript) Very lengthy responsum (more than seven pages!) handwritten and signed by the mighty gaon Rabbi Aharon Pressburger, may his blood be avenged, rabbi and av beit din of Bonyhád, author of Shu”t Pe'er Aharon , sent to the gaon Rabbi Chaim Aharon Reiner, a Mishkoltz rabbi. Bonyhád, Tevet, 1942. The responsum was printed in the Pe'er Aharon responsa (Jerusalem, 2003), siman 10, from this very manuscript. This special responsum was written during WWII, when six million Jews were slaughtered and incinerated, including this letter writer himself, may their blood be avenged. Rabbi Aharon mentions the difficult situation at the beginning of his letter: ”... please do not blame me for this letter's delay until now, because I was completely surrounded by troubles. Believe me, my friend, I have not been able to even consider writing letters, because of the distress of our Jewish brethren, which is only increasing on a daily basis, due to our many sins. May the good G-d have mercy on us soon ...” The situation is also mentioned by Rabbi Aharon in the date of the letter: ”Thursday of the parashah ”and now the cry of the Jewish people is coming to Me.” The letter is divided into three separate responsa, one for each of the addressee's questions: The first responsum deals with one who was forced to eat matzah - has he fulfilled his obligation? The second deals with cooking for the needs of Yom Tov and Shabbat. The third responsum is the primary and very lengthy responsum that spans most of the kuntress . This responsum deals with the blessing on Hallel. Here the av beit din of Bonyhád explains at length, intellectually and somewhat philosophically, the entire idea of expressing thanks to Hashem, using fascinating and unique language with glorious significance as it is written from the valley of tears, when the entire Jewish people in Europe - including the elders, the women, and the children are being burned in the ovens of death that do not for a moment cease to spit out fire and brimstone, and at a time such as this gedolei Yisrael are occupied with the concept of expressing appreciation to Hashem. Who is like Your people Yisrael? In the middle of writing the third responsum, the writer received news of the passing of the gaon Rabbi Ezra Menachem Goldstein, av beit din of Balatonfüred, and he notes that he cannot go on at length due to his sorrow. For more about Rabbi Ezra Menachem, refer to Kehillot Hungariah (Jerusalem) pp 54-55. (The above responsum was mistakenly printed and deciphered as Balaton, which is why they were unable to identify the rabbi here).
