To be a Sandek Twice: Revolutionary Halachic Ruling Handwritten by the Aruch LaNer! - ”A sandek  is like one who brings ketoret , so there is a custom not to give two children to one ba'al brit , as it says about ketoret : Chadashim LiKetoret.”  (Yoreh Deah siman  265, se'if  11) Relatively lengthy and extremely important halachic ruling [over 60 words] on a topic that concerns almost every Jewish family, and occasionally causes serious disputes. Entirely handwritten by the glory of the Ashkenazic rabbinate, the mighty gaon Rabbi Ya'akov Ettlinger, av beit din of Altona and author of Aruch LaNer  - one of the greatest Jewish leaders of all time. The ruling deals with the halachahs of sandeka'ut . It was sent to the Aruch LaNer's son-in-law, the gaon Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Bamberger, av beit din  of Bad-Kissingen, son of the senior rav of Würzburg. [Altona? Between 1867-1871] This is an issue that almost every Jewish family with more than one son has had to contend with - whether the same person can be honored twice with sandeka'ut . The spiritual status of the sandek  is known to influence the baby's spiritual status for his entire life, so people are particular to choose a sandek  from among the gedolei hador . The question arises when a second son is born to the same family, and the baby's father wants to take  sandeka'ut  again for himself, or wants to honor the same gadol hador again. It is worth noting that indeed, the words of Rabbi Yehudah HeChassid should be closely noted, according to the words of the Aruch LaNer, as follows: ”He should not make his friend a sandek  for his two sons unless one dies.” Very important halachic letter.
