Discovery: Unknown Work by the Gaon Rabbi Raphael Meldola, Author of Chupat Chatanim - ”Bundle of virtues, minister of praises, butzina kaddisha v'zohara d'shimsha,  Torah will emanate from his mouth ... blessed is he who reveals insights, no one matches him in wisdom; he is modest like Hillel”   (missive from the sages of his generation, rhyming in the original Hebrew) Beautiful manuscript - novellae and Shu”t  by a disciple of the Chid”a, the complete sage Rabbi Raphael Meldola, rabbi of the Sephardic community in London and one of the leading rabbis of his generation, whose sacred grave is known for its tremendous segulah (see below). Autograph script with glosses in the margins of the leaves. Entirely in Rabbi Meldola's penmanship. One of the responsa is signed. [Livorno/London], late 18th century-early 19th century. Signed autograph. To the best of our knowledge, it has never been printed. The manuscript spans approximately [78] written pages [about 20,000 words], making up a substantial work, handwritten by the mighty gaon Rabbi Raphael b”r Moshe Chizkiyah Meldola. The notebook includes hundreds of novellae on tractates from the six orders of the mishnah, responsa correspondence between him and other sages of his generation, comments on the Mizrachi's supercommentary on Rash”i's commentary on the Torah, comments on the Ramba”m, the Beit Yosef and more. The novellae on tractate Kilayim include handwritten diagrams. ”A letter from the city of Turin” appears on p. 7 regarding a certain change requested by the new rabbi in the Aravit prayer per the Ashkenazic custom. Rabbi Raphael cites testimony from his teacher, Rabbi David Chaim Shmuel Chassan in his responsum regarding the custom of Kabbalat Shabbat as conducted by a group of Kabbalists from among the Rasha”sh's disciples in Jerusalem, as follows: ”The words of my primary teacher, the expert Rabbi R' David Chaim Chassin [zlh”h] who we have been privileged to have among us - the light of his Torah shines in our city. I heard that when he was in Jerusalem, in the yeshivah run by the pious rabbi, the G-dly Kabbalist, the sacred Shalom Mizrachi, that elder rabbis would gather there, talmidei chachamim of the West, according to whom the precise medakdekim  generally follow their conduct. On Erev Shabbat, before nightfall, they would gather according to their custom to recite Minchah, and then they would greet Shabbat with Lecha Dodi followed by Mizmor Shir. They would then recite eight chapters and hymns as well, until darkness was imminent. At that point they would recite Aravit, as the law dictates that kriyat shema at the proper time, and the rabbi's custom. The complete sage, the rabbinic emissary Chizkiyah Ba'alul also told me this was the case when he was here, too ...” He signs this responsum, ”the youth who sits at the dust of the rabbis and their disciples ... R”M (Raphael Meldola).” Alongside his sacred signature is another, written by someone else: 'Raphael son of Chizkiyahu Meldola S”T.' Beautiful, legible autographic script, with erasures and additions. This ledger was apparently written over some time. Several signature trials: ”Raphael Meldola” - apparently not in this same Rabbi Raphael Meldola's own penmanship. Overall fine condition. Aging stains. Single slight tears. Some of the leaves are detached. Antique binding.
