Famous Letter from the Leading Rabbi of Hungary, Mahara”m A”sh, to the son of the Mar'eh Yechezkel - Great among giants Important and famous historic-halachic letter from the leader of the Hungarian rashei yeshivah , the sacred gaon Rabbi Meir A”sh [Eisenstadt], av beit din of Ungvar and one of the Chatam Sofer's leading disciples. Sent to the gaon Rabbi Chaim Betzalel Panet, av beit din  of Toshnad, also a disciple of the Chatam Sofer's, and one of the leading rabbis of Transylvania. Ungvar, 1843. The letter is divided into two parts. It deals with halachic topics and current events of the period. It also mentions the battles of the leading Hungarian rabbis with the Neologs and their ilk. In the tradition of the Mahara”m Schick from his teacher, the Chatam Sofer, he attacks the Neologs in his letter, calling them apikorsim : ” Apikorsim  are multiplying everywhere, disturbing rabbis, and those who select novelty.” The background for this letter is the refusal of the Carlsburg community to appoint the sons of the Mar'eh Yechezkel in their father's place, despite them not deserving this treatment, neither the eldest son of the Mar'eh Yechezkel, Rabbi Chaim Betzalel, addressee of this letter, nor his brother, the sacred Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Dej, author of Ma'agalei Tzeddek . The second part of the letter (after the signature) deals with serious mikveh issues. The Mahara”m A”sh bravely flourishes his pen to disagree with the leading rabbi of Galicia, the gaon Rabbi Shlomo Kluger - the maggid  of Brody. The root of the disagreement between them is regarding a perforated barrel full of warm water hung by chains inside a mikveh. The women would immerse in the warm water due to the chill of the mikveh. Maharsha”k prohibited this due to the barrel not being attached to the ground. In this letter, Mahara”m A”sh disagrees with him, writing, ”I do not agree with him here.” (Rabbi Shlomo Kluger's sefarim  have no mention of this.) Due to the tremendous significance of this letter, it has been printed many times. There is a picture of the letter in HaChatam Sofer V'Talmidav (Bnei Brak, 2005, p. 300). The letter itself is printed (just the historic part, not the Torah part) in Sefer Merkavat Yechezkel  (Bnei Brak, 1944) as well as in Kovetz Tiferet Yisrael  25 (Jerusalem, 1991, p, 25, note 9). The entire letter and the halachic responsum are printed in  Shu”t Imrei A”sh HaChadashot (Bnei Brak, 2013, pp. 398-399).
