Polemic Letter of Historic Significance from the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik. 1964 - Fascinating political-polemic letter from the gaon Rabbi Yosef Dov HaLevi Soloveitchik, head of Yeshiva University, regarding the affair of the ZIM company ship, Shalom [Nissan/March, 1964]. The letter was sent to Minister Moshe Shapira in response to the telegram the latter had sent him. Background to the letter: The affair of the Shalom Ship was one of the biggest scandals in the young state of Israel in matters of religion and state. This luxury liner, the 'flagship' of the ZIM company, was equipped with a treif kitchen where they even cooked pork (alongside a kosher kitchen). As a result, the chief rabbinate removed its supervision from this ship and from all ZIM ships. Following the threat from the leader of the Mafda”l, Minister of the Interior Moshe Shapira that he would resign from the government, the treif kitchen in the ship was closed. The gaon Rabbi Yosef Dov HaLevi Soloveitchik supports the interior minister in this letter, using warm words for the great success in this battle, and the public kiddush Hashem  this made, and he attacks the Conservatives and the Reform.
