Siddur Beit El, with Russian Translation. Kobe [Japan], 1920. The Only Hebrew Book Printed in Kobe, Japan

Siddur Beit El - siddur with Russian translation by Asher Wohl, Sputnik Press. Kobe [Japan]. 1920.

Siddur for the entire year, with the Passover haggadah, all the laws of Passover, and a table to determine the festivals for ten years. The Russian translation is in facing columns. With instructions in Russian. Hebrew title page and another title page - in Russian. Small illustration on the back of the title page of a wayfaring Jew on a path.

This is the only Hebrew book printed in Kobe, Japan. It is the first siddur printed in Japan, and apparently also the first Passover haggadah printed in Japan.

Kobe ( 神戸市 in Japanese) is the fifth-largest city in Japan, located on Honshu Island.

During the 1920s, approximately a thousand Jews lived there. Twenty years after this siddur was printed, the yeshivah students fleeing Lithuania arrived there on their way to Shanghai.

In this copy, in the Yom Kippur prayers, a printed leaf is bound with the memorial prayer in Russian!

24, 498, XVI pp, 19 cm.

Fine condition. Tiny tears in the margins of the leaves.
