Rare and Interesting Halachic Responsum from the Maharsha”m of Berezan - Rare and exceptional halachic responsum, entirely [approximately 100 words] handwritten and signed by the leading posek  of Galicia, the sacred gaon Rabbi Mordechai Shalom Schwadron, known as the ”Maharsha”m of Berezan” after the title of his monumental book series, Shu”t Maharsha”m . Berezan, 1910? Beautiful and interesting halachic responsum asked of one of the rabbis of the most distinguished lineage in Galicia, with respect to a man whose wife has asked not to live in her father-in-law's home due to harchek min hachi'ur  - is the husband required to leave his father's home to live in another residence? The Maharsha”m, whose responsa were known for their ko'ach d'heiterah , unusually decides stringently in this case: The husband should immediately leave his father's home, despite there being no issur  involved in his living there! The Maharsha”m adds a snif  to the prohibition due to kattet chamotah - so that she not quarrel with her father-in-law. This psak din  is another source for the Belz tradition, which does not have a source in the literature, that the Sar Shalom of Belz instructed the Maharsha”m of Berezan to consistently render decisions according to ko'ach d'heteira  - except for issues of marriage and Shabbat observation. Indeed, in this letter dealing with marriage-related matters, the Maharsha”m decides stringently, unlike his usual style. Although there is no strict prohibition here, he is clear and decisive. Speaking of the Maharsha”m's ko'ach d'heteira , it worth noting that it is brought in the name of the Steipler that this shows the extent of  yeridat hadorot : When Shu”t Maharsha”m  was first printed, the gedolei hador  of the time requested, due to many opinions that appeared in it, that the beginning of each volume state that the sefer  is not practical halachah.
