Printing the Würzburger Rav's Sefarim without his Permission! Historic Responsum from Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor

Historic letter with a lengthy and rare responsum. Entirely [2 pp] handwritten and signed by the leader of the entire Diaspora, the gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor, rabbi of Kovno and one of the leaders of Chareidi Jewry. Kovno, 16 Iyar, 1880.

The letter is addressed to Rabbi Moshe Aryeh [Leib] HaLevi Bamberger, rabbi of Bad Kissingen, and son of the 'Würzburger Rav' who was one of the gedolim of Germany in the 19th century. In his lengthy and reasoned responsum, Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan issues an exceptional dispensation - almost historic - to print writings by the gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Dov (Seligman) Bamberger of Würzburg - against his will! At the end of his letter is a blessing that the sefarim be successfully distributed, a blessing that was (obviously) completely fulfilled.

Background to the letter: The Würzburger Rav wrote many halachic responsa in his lifetime, but left instructions not to print them. After his passing, his son Rabbi Moshe Aryeh turned to Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spector with the question as to whether he could disobey his father's words, and print them. In this letter, he responds that in his opinion, it is permissible to print the responsa. Shu"t Yad HaLevi was printed years later, 1965-1987, in three parts.

Due to his many obligations as gadol hador, most of Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan's letters were written by secretaries and only signed by him. In this letter, possibly out of respect for the addressee, Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan wrote the letter himself, entirely in his own hand.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor and of the addressee, Rabbi Moshe Aryeh (Leib) HaLevi Bamberger.

[2] written pages, approximately 21 cm, entirely handwritten in Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan's rare handwriting and with his signature.
