Historic: Dozens of Secret Rabbinic Documents about Agunot signed by the Ra'ava”d of Warsaw, Rabbi Shlomo David Kahana - ”List of me'agnim  in America whose place of residence is known to us” Group of top secret documents from Agudat HaRabbanim of Warsaw's ”HaLishkah HaMercazit L'Inyanei Agunot” with details of approximately one hundred Polish Jews, mainly men, who immigrated to the ” Goldene Medineh ” - America, and left their spouses and families behind. Warsaw, 1929. Across all generations, leaders of the Jewish people in the Diaspora kept lists of families who were  psulei chitun  (refer to Tractate Kiddushin page 71b). Naturally, when it came to issues of lineage and the purity of marriage that could cause concern for all future generations, the lists were kept very confidential, the domain of rabbis only. These rare lists here deal with such sensitive subjects and contain the full details of the halachically ”problematic” immigrants from among the progenitors of the Jewish community in America; they were confidential at the time, and they remain so to this day. Background: Towards the end of the 19th century, over a million immigrants arrived on American shores from European countries. The largest group came from Poland. Estimates maintain that about a third of these immigrants were Jewish. Jewish immigration was unique in its very low rate of return to the countries of origin. The immigrants included Chareidi   Jews who left their families behind with a promise to bring them to America at a later date. As is known, in those years, the immigrants had no choice but to work on Shabbat, and those Jews slowly left religion altogether, occasionally even completely abandoning the families they left behind in Europe - sometimes from the shame of having been forced to abandon their religion, and sometimes because they began a new life with a different spouse. The gaon Rabbi Shlomo David Kahana jumped right into the thick of the matter. He was known in his generation as the ”father of agunot” due to his heroic activities to release the agunot of WWI. These documents here show that through ”HaLishkah HaMercazit L'Inyanei Agunot” under his leadership, he amassed about one hundred cases of igun  among Polish citizens who immigrated to America and cut off contact with their spouses and children. The results of his tremendous research, including ketubot of recalcitrant spouses in America, were turned over to the rabbinic leadership in the United States - the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada. First, so they would locate the me'agnim  and try to convince them to reunite with their families whether in the United States or in Europe, and should the rabbis not succeed in convincing them to reunite, to arrange a get so as to save the wives from the fate of being agunot, and to preserve the sacred lineage of the Jewish people. This is a very rare sefer yuchsin , important and historic, mainly concerned with the ”problematic” families from among the Jewish immigrants from Europe - who founded the largest Jewish community in the Diaspora. The list opens with a lengthy letter signed by the av beit din  of Warsaw detailing the essence of the lists, their importance, the date it was written and other important details.
