Especially Beautiful Letter Handwritten by Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook, Regarding the Kabbalist Rabbi Meshel [Gelbstein]. 1905

Historic early letter, important and beautiful, entirely handwritten and signed by the gaon Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook from the period he served as av beit din of Jaffa and the colonies. Sent to Rabbi Nachman Gedaliah [Bruder], chairman of Knesset Yisrael's finance committee with respect to the Polish-Yerushalmi Kabbalist the sacred gaon Rabbi Meshel Gelbstein, disciple of the saraf of Kotzk and the Tzemach Tzeddek. Jaffa, 1905.

Rabbi Kook pleads with Rabbi Bruder that he rush assistance to Rabbi Meshel "Who is very ill" - after which Rabbi Kook speaks Rabbi Meshel's praises: "a huge soul, a great Torah scholar, full of excellence and piety." Rabbi Kook, in his lyrical-Talmudic language, writes about his involvement with public needs, which prevent him from being active for Rabbi Meshel's benefit. "Unfortunately, my heart and soul are full of [caring for the public]." He concludes with words of praise for the addressee, Rabbi Bruder, "I know that a little inspiration will suffice to light a sacred fire in [your] heart."

This letter broadcasts the piety and purity of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen's soul, as Rabbi Meshel was a member of the circle in the Old Yishuv in Jerusalem, alongside Mahari"l Diskin and Rabbi Shmuel Salant, and Rabbi Kook makes such efforts in his letter, pleading on his behalf, all - as appears from this letter - without Rabbi Meshel even turning to him for his help.

Given the fact that Rabbi Kook's letter deals with Rabbi Meshel Gelbstein, it is appropriate to mention Rabbi Meshel's revolutionary and novel approach, that which he viewed as his mission in life, and about which he authored his sefer, Mishkenot L'Abir Ya'akov, in which he proves that the obligation to preserve the mikdash also applies today, and it may be fulfilled as well outside of the Temple Mount!
