Signed Manuscript - Songs and Hymns. Tunis, 18th Century - Manuscript - Large anthology of hundreds of hymns. Hebrew with some Judeo-Arabic. [Tunis, 18th century.] This manuscript was written by the scribe and songwriter Rabbi Nissim Yanna, a Tunis sage. Page 42a bears a lengthy and interesting notation handwritten and signed by him: ”The young copyist Nissim Yanna S”T son of the deceased Menachem Yanna stated 'While writing these hymns, I saw that in hymn 57 by Metraj, he writes [Hymn 120; the author's name is Metraj] matters that are improper, as they are the opposite of what is written in Sefer Mishlei   ... therefore I advise you not to heed Metraj's hymn 57, and not desire it, because the author misadvises therein ... and he can be understood as having been joking for the sake of bringing joy to a bride and groom ... as it was written in the Arabic language for the masses using laughter and riddles ...'” This is followed by an interesting comment regarding the order the hymns are recited: ”This city's custom is to recite them during Shabbat night, in the wee hours of the morning ...” The copyist signed at the end of this passage: ”The young and tiny, copyist and petitioner, Nissim son of Menachem Yanna ...” Hymns [9]-263 appear here (with several hymns missing from the middle). Provenance: Yisrael Mehlman collection. [78] leaves, written on both sides. Lacking several leaves at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the book. 20.5 cm. Moderate condition. Stains. Tears with blemishes in the text. Simple binding.
