Jerusalem and its Sacred Sites - Early Embroidery (Tapestry) Inspired by Simchah Yanover, Jerusalem? Early 20th Century

The embroidery is built around a central circle depicting the Western Wall, Midrash Shlomo and the Beit HaMikdash with two stars of David embroidered at the top.

13 tombs appear around the circle with typical Jerusalem subjects: Shimon HaTzaddik, the 70 members of Sanhedrin, Hebron, Avner Ben Ner, Chagai HaNavi and more. Pictured at the four corners are the tombs of the kings of the Davidic dynasty, Chuldah the prophetess, Shmuel HaNavi and our matriarch Rachel. The words of the hymn "Shalom Aleichem" appear in the margins.

This piece was inspired by the work of embroidery artist Simchah Yanover. For further discussion of this artist and his methods, refer to

"A Group of Embroidered Cloths from Jerusalem by Richard Barnett" in the Journal of Jewish Art, vol. 2 pp 28-39, 1975.
