The Gemara that Belonged to the World-Class Artist, Hermann Struck. Scholarly Glosses

Volume of the Babylonian Talmud including six tractates: Rosh HaShanah, Yoma, Sukkah, Ta'anit, Shekalim (Yerushalmi) and Meggilah. Dyhernfurth, The Partners Press, 1803.

Signature on the title page from the gaon Rabbi Shlomo Michael Struck, av bei din of Obersitzko: "Hashem has granted me this, Shlomo Michael son of Rabbi Aharon Eliezer ..." with a stamp on the title page from the famous artist "Hermann Struck, Haifa, Hadar HaCarmel." Handwritten scholarly glosses along the gemara, some lengthy.

It is so exciting to see how Hermann Struck, the world-class painter whose works are in demand in royal palaces, one of the most important artists in Germany and Paris, a member of the school of thought that wanted to destroy the old world to its very foundations, to abandon the exile mentality and became enlightened and progressive - how he zealously preserved his elderly grandfather's antique gemara with its glosses for over fifty years, the devotion with which he ascends with it from Berlin to the Land of Israel where it accompanies him to the last station of his life, in his spacious house on the slopes of Mount Carmel in Haifa.
