The First Book Printed in Livorno: Set of Yalkut Shimoni, 1650-7

Sefer Yalkut Shimoni al HaTorah, Nevi'im U'Ketuvim in three volumes, with the "Brit Avraham" commentary (first edition) by Rabbi Avraham Gedaliah, a resident of the Land of Israel. Livorno, at the press of Yedidyah ben R' Yitzchak Gabbai, author of Kaf Nachat 1650-7. First book printed in Livono.

This important edition was printed with great precision and with the addition of new passages, and it is different from the earlier versions. The book was printed over about seven years (material included). The commentary "Brit Avraham" was printed for the first time in this edition.

A unique phenomenon appears in this book - at the end of Part II, the text is arranged in the form of a menorah, because the printing concluded on 24 Kislev. A list of books the author used for his compilation appear at the beginning of Part II. These include Sefer HaShla"h HaKadosh, printed just a few years earlier in Amsterdam.

It is interesting to note that this book is one of the earliest sources that mentions the custom that it is prohibited[!] to study mishnah on the night of Shavuot. Rabbi Avraham Gedaliah writes on page 117b "I heard from the aforementioned rabbi [Rabbi Chaim HaKohen, author of Tur Patdah], that is it not proper to study mishanyot on the night of Shavuot in any way, as mishnah is shifchah d'matronita and on this night, we must rectify the matronita, as is known. ... and one who studies mishnah on this night is acting irrationally." The Chid"a cites this in his sefer (Lev David, Chap. 31), and notes that this custom has spread in Jerusalem and Safed.

Volume I al HaTorah - Leaves 1-186. The title page is lacking; it was completed by photocopy. 33 cm.

Overall fine condition. Worming perforations and tunnels in several leaves. Aging stains and adhesions in the first and last leaves.
