Ohr Zarua, First Edition. Zhitomir. Copy that Belonged to the 'Sdei Chemed'

Sefer Ohr Zarua - halachic rulings with responsa by Rabbi Yitzchak b"r Moshe of Vienna. Important halachic work that is cited by many later halachic works. Two parts bound together with separate title pages. Shapira brothers' press, grandsons of the rabbi of Slavuta. Zhitomir, 1862. First edition.

First edition of the important work by one of the leading Rishonim, printed hundreds of years after it was written. The book's manuscript was found in the archives of Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Lehren of Amsterdam, who bought it from a fisherman in Paris. This manuscript was miraculously rescued from the boat it was on, which sank to the depths of the sea. The book is adorned with approbations by the author of Chiddushei HaRi"m, Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan of Kovno and others.

Owner's stamp on the title page, belonging to the mighty gaon Rabbi Chaim Chizkiyahu Medini, author of Sdei Chemed. There is also a beautiful owner's notation in Oriental script on the title page: "I bought this book with funds I dedicated to my dear friend the elder rabbi ... David Yitzchak Finkelstein of Bialystock, along with many other books, as written in each book, so that his name be remembered for the good." This notation may also be the Sdei Chemed's script.

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for brief biographies of the author, Rabbi Yitzchak Moshe of Vienna, and of Chacham Chaim Chizkiyahu Medini.

[2], 232: 4, 184 p, 38 cm. On both title pages, the name of the book and the place it was printed appear in red ink.
