Chiddushei Mahara"m Schiff. First Edition. Signatures and Gloss
Sefer Chiddushei Halachot Part II. Novellae by the gaon Rabbi Meir - Mahara"m Schiff of Frankfurt, on Tractates: Bava Kamma, Bava Batra, Sanhedrin, Shabbat, Meggilah, Zevachim, and some sermons and elucidations of verses. Hamburg, 1741. First edition. The title page bears rabbinic owners' signatures from the time of printing. Scholarly gloss in an antique script on page 26b.
First edition of the Mahara"m Schiff's novellae - one of the fundamental books of Talmudic elucidation. This first edition was printed as a book in its own right. Later editions, due to the book's importance, were inserted into volumes of the Babylonian Talmud, and it is printed to this day in all editions of Sha"s alongside the Ri"f and the Maharsh"a.
A large, impressive picture appears at the top of the title page depicting Rabbah Bar Bar Channah's aggadah about the sailors who descended from their ship and lit a fire on a leviathan's back, thinking it was dry land. This rare illustration is exceptional in Torah literature. It is related to the Mahara"m's Schiff's name - "schiff" in Yiddish means ship (as explained by the author's grandson).
