Three Pocket Diaries Which Belonged to the Rabbi of Rotterdam, Rabbi Dov Aryeh Ritter with Writing in His Hadwiting
Three pocket format calendars published in Amsterdam in 1886,1895 ,1896-7. On the calendars have comments and notes in the handwriting of Rabbi Dov Aryeh Ritter, Rabbi of Rotterdam.
On the parchment binding of the calendar from 1886 is an ownership inscription in his handwriting: "The small one Dov Aryeh Ritter". In the calendar's leaves, Rabbi Ritter made notes on various topics [some personal] such as: "My sister's birthday 4 Cheshvan', 'Rabbi Kahn's daughter's wedding', 'Yartzheit of Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan of Kovna' and more. The calendars themselves are important and rare and contain extremely important informative content.
Rabbi Dov Aryeh Ritter, Rabbi of Rotterdam [Holland], was one of the first to claim that the Jerusalem Talmud circulated by Shlomo Friedlander [Zusya] was a forgery, and even recorded his opinion in writing at an early stage of the polemic. In addition, he publicized an article in the "Der Yisraelite" journal in which he explicitly claimed that Friedlander's Jerusalem Talmud was forged, long before the truth was discovered.
