Erich Mendelssohn - Amerika: Bilderbuch eines Architekten. Berlin: Rudolf Mosse, 1928, Sixth revised and expanded edition.
101 (in comparison to only 77 in the first edition!) expressive photographs of urban landscapes taken by Erich Mendelsohn, Jewish German expressionist / Art Deco / Streamline Moderne architect during his visits to the United States.
His US consists of New York, Chicago, Detroit and Buffalo. Photos include those of New York's Times Square, Fifth Avenue, the Brooklyn Bridge, Trinity Church are featured as well as Chicago's Michigan Avenue, the Chicago Tribune Building, and the Federal Reserve Bank.
In the spring of 1933, in the wake of growing antisemitism and the rise of the Nazis in Germany, he fled to England. His assets were seized by the Nazis, his name struck from the list of the German Architects' Union, and he was excluded from the Prussian Academy of Arts. In 1935, he opened an office in Jerusalem and planned Jerusalem stone buildings in the International Style that greatly influenced local architecture. From 1941 until his death (1956), Mendelsohn lived in the United States and taught at the University of California, Berkeley.
Includes 16 photographs by architect Knud Lönberg-Holm, which appeared uncredited in the 1926 first edition. Only in this later, expanded edition was Lönberg-Holm given credit! 1 photograph by film director Fritz Lang, and 22 photographs by German architect Erich Karweik.
El Lissitzky was so impressed with "Amerika" that he said the volume "thrills us like a dramatic film. Before our eyes move pictures that are absolutely unique. In order to understand some of the photographs you must lift the book over your head and rotate it."
