Commemorative Zikaron Book for the Cluj Kolozsvár Jewery by Dr. Moshe Carmilly-Weinberger, Hebrew-Hungarian and English, 466 pages and photo pags of the Jewish community, hard cover. In good general condition: decoration on the front cover is abrased, yellowing to the opening and closing of the coating sheets. Cluj Kolozsvár Jewish community was formed in the first half of the 19th century. The Jews started visiting the town in the early 16th century, however due to a restriction on Jews living in the site, no community was formed, only on a later century (19th). In a city council report from 1835 61 male and 48 female Jews are noted. A change in legislation from 1840 permitted Jews to live in the city and the community grew rapidly - in 1846 56 Jewish families were counted. According to the 1910 census Cluj had 7,046 members of the jewish religion and in 1930 13,504 were counted for. In 1941, before the Holocaust of Northern Transylvania Jews Cluj had 16,763 Jews.
