Hallmark – “AW” – the artist Adolf Weiss, who worked in the mid-19th century and was a member of the Guild of Viennese Artists. The society used to help the poor people of the city and women who had given birth, and in exchange they were honored to serve as the sandak of the baby. The members of the society were usually the important members of the city who wanted the wonderful segulah and the honor of being a sandak (see Responsa Chatam Sofer Yoreh Deah 246; cited in the Pitchei Teshuva, Yoreh Deah, 264:11; Responsa Machane Chaim, Orach Chaim: 9 and others).
