Letter of Greetings from Rabbi Eliezer Zusia Portugal of Skulen
Letter of greetings with the Admo"r of Skulen Rabbi Eliezer Zusia Portugal's handwriting and signature [12 words]. Brooklyn, NY.
Printed leaf with blessings bearing the inscription: "Eliezer Zusia Portugal of Skulen blesses his honor with a year of life, blessing and peace." At center, the Admo"r has added the name of the recipient of his blessing by hand, and signed his name: "The small one, Eliezer Zusia Portugal."
The Admo"r Rabbi Eliezer Zusia Portugalֲ [1898-1982] was the first Admo"r of Skulen, a Chassidic court which today numbers in the thousands, mainly in the United States. He was considered a prodigy, and when his father passed away when Rabbi Eliezer was only 17 years old, he was chosen as his father's successor in the Skulen rabbinate. Over the years, Chassidim began to gather around him and he was appointed Admo"r of Skulen. After the Holocaust, he was active in granting assistance to surviving orphaned children, to the point that in some of their registration papers, he even wrote that he was their biological father. He continued his activities with them until the end of his life by establishing the 'Chessed L'Avraham' orphanages and supporting them himself. As a result, the Communist regime imprisoned him for this together with his son. The Admo"r's son writes as follows about the imprisonment: "I was literally just one step from death, there was no natural way to survive; we were literally miraculously saved from death." During this same period, for the purpose of misrepresentation and international propaganda, the Communists arranged a 'melaveh malkah' in the presence of important personalities from outside the Iron Curtain, in which rabbis were forced to speak about the positive situation of the Jews in the USSR. It is told that the Skulener Rebbe said to them that he does not know how to speak; he would sing a tune instead. The Rebbe, who was a gifted composer,ֲ composed the famous niggun for the words of Psalms 79: "Let it be known among the nations, before our eyes, avenge Your servants' spilled blood. Let the prisoner's groan come before You; as the greatness of Your arms, spare those condemned to death. Repay our neighbors sevenfold to their bosoms, their disgrace as they have disgraced You, Hash-m." With this, he hinted to the grim state of the Jews in Soviet bloc. His works: Kedushat Eliezer on topics of Chanukah; Noam Eliezer on the Torah.
