Siftei Yeshenim - First Edition. Amsterdam, 1680. First Hebrew Bibliographic Book
Siftei Yeshenim - names of books and their authors, books' contents, place and year of print. Also includes unprinted manuscripts, by Rabbi Shabtai Meshorrer Bass, author of "Siftei Chachamim" on Rash"i's commentary. This is the first Hebrew bibliographic book.
The book includes approximately 2000 titles of books that were printed, as well as books in manuscript. The author arranged the books using an original division he himself founded: Division by topic, secondary topics and sub-topics. The author added bibliographic details of each book. The book before us received many approbations. It opens with an interesting introduction by the author about the importance and purpose of the book.
Rabbi Shabtai Meshorrer Bassֲ [1641-1718] authored the well-known commentary on Rashi"'s commentary on the Torah, "Siftei Chachamim," which is printed in all the chumashim. His brother was the "G-dly man" Rabbi Ya'akov Stirmarsh, who ascended to the Land of Israel, as is mentioned in the approbations of the book before us. Rabbi Shabtai established the printing press in Dyhrenfurth, where he could print his books, and he founded the Jewish community there. He was also a renowned expert on sefarim, and he traveled around looking for books.
