Rosh Hashana Sermon by Rabbi Chaim Berlin
A Rosh Hashana sermon in the handwriting of Rabbi Chaim Berlin. [Moscow?, 188?]. Autographic writing with erasing and additions.
In the sermon the writer mentions and eulogizes "and this year we have lost two great people, that we are obligated to eulogize, at the beginning of the year … Rabbi Yitzchak Horowitz … one in his generation who has not left anyone like him. And the last … that the whole world walks by his light, a wellspring of Torah".
Rabbi Chaim Berlin (1832-1913, Otzar HaRabbanim 592), son of the Natziv of Volozhin, served as Rabbi of Moscow, Volozhin, Kobrin, Yelisavetgrod and Jerusalem. One of the greatest rabbis of his generation in all topics related to Torah, wrote thousands of responsa. Most of his writings were never printed, only some of his responsa and halachic novella were recently printed in the four volumes of the responsa Nishmat Chaim. His correspondence on halacha with Rabbi Yitzchak HaLevi Horowitz from 1849 was printed in Nishmat Chaim (Simanim: 39, 59, 74, 78). [Rabbi Chaim Berlin was related to Rabbi Yitchak Moshe HaLevi Horowitz, Rabbi of Moscow, as he was the son in law of Rabbi Meir Berlin, Rabbi of Mohilev, Rabbi Chaim Berlin's great uncle].
