Letter by the Iluy [genius] from Maychit
Letter from Rabbi Shlomo Policheck “The Iluy from Maychit”. (Brooklyn, October 1922).
Sent to Poland, to the administrator of the “Tachkemoni” school in Bialistock (in which Rabbi Shlomo served as teacher, in the year before traveling to the USA). The letter deals with the efforts made in order to approve monetary assistance from the “Central Relief” in the USA for the benefit of the “Tachkemoni” school. In the letter, which was sent approximately a month after his arrival to the US, he writes: "I apologize that I have not written earlier since I was very preoccupied since I still have not acclimated myself to this county and its people…”.
The following are mentioned in the letter: Rabbi Meir Berlin, Rabbi Rosenberg, “our dear friend… the Ga’on Rabbi Ya'akov Av Beit Din of the holy congregation of Charashtz and the Av Beit Din of Hardack”.
The Ga’on Rabbi Shlomo Policheck (1878-1928, Ozar Ha’Rabbanim 18569) was well-known in the yeshiva world as “The Iluy from Maychit”. He was referred to by this name from age 12 upon his arrival at the Volozhin yeshiva to study. His geniuses reasoning were famous throughout all the Lithuanian Yeshivot and until this very day are popular. When Rabbi Yitzchak Rines opened his yeshiva in Lida, the “Iluy from Maychit” was appointed as Rosh Yeshiva. In the year 1921 he was summoned to serve as Rosh Yeshiva of “Rabbeinu Yitzchak Elchanan” yeshiva in New York (USA). See attached material.
