S’deh Chemed, by Rabbi Chaim Chizkiyahu Medini. First part of second volume, letters Alef-Gimel, Warsaw, 1891.
A leaf with a dedication is glued to the back of the title page, it reads: “Souvenir of this close friendship”, part of it is written in print letters and part in the author’s handwriting: “I am honored [to dedicate my book S’deh Chemed] to the Gaon… Rabbi Yosef Zechariah Stern Av Beit Din of Siauliai…”. At the end of the printed dedication, there is an ink stamp from “Rabbi Chaim Chizkiyahu Medini… KaraSubazar”.
Includes title cover with the author’s handwritten inscription: “Siauliai - to the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Zechariah Stern”.
On the back page there is a handwritten copy of a Halachic question [from the S’deh Chemed?], written by the Gaon from Siauliai. There are additional inscriptions in the same handwriting [by the Gaon from Siauliai].
Rabbi Chaim Chizkiyahu Medini, (1833-1905) was born in Jerusalem, served as rabbi in Krim and Hebron; a tremendous scholar. Compiled the Torah Encyclopedia on his own, tens of volumes of "S'deh Chemed", and other books.
The recipient of the book, Rabbi Yosef Zechariah Stern (1831-1904, Otzar Harabanim 8783), was the son in law of Rabbi Mordechai Gimpel Yaffe, Gaon and Posek, was among the greatest Torah scholars of his generation. He served as Rabbi in Yashinovka, and in Siauliai (Lithuania) from 1861. Authored the “Zecher Yosef” and the “Tahluchot Ha-Aggadot”.
