Medal / Paperweight – Judith and Moses Montefiore – London / Brussels, 1864
Medal with the portraits of Judith and Moses Montefiore, manufactured by Charles Wiener, Brussels (Belgium), 1864. Embedded in a table stand manufactured by Henry Atkin, London, 1867.
Medal: cast bronze. Stand: Silver (stamped).
On one side of the medal are the portraits of Judith and Moses Montefiore, facing left, surrounded by the inscription "Judith Lady Montefiore. Sir Moses Montefiore. Bart. F.R.S." with the manufacturer's stamp "Ch. Wiener 1864" underneath. On the second side are verses "And Moses grew and went out to his brothers and saw their suffering" / "… and those who do justice with the multitude shine like stars ever after", placed in the center of a bouquet of branches and flowers tied with a ribbon. Written on the ribbon are Jerusalem / Damascus 1840 / Russia 1846 / Rome 1858 / Morocco 1867, place and date of events which took place during the 19th century in which Montefiore was active in assisting Jewish people throughout the world.
Circumference of medal: 6.8 cm. Height of stand: 13 cm, length and width 8X8 cm.
