Lot 2 copies of the book MegillatEiva by Rabbi Yom Tov Lipman Heller.
1. MegillatEiva, Warsaw 1870. Printer: Yitzhak Rather. [1], 14, [1] pages. 12cm. Paper binding. Generally good condition. 2. MegillatEiva, Lodz 1928. Published by Yehoshua Shapira. Paper binding, generally good condition. Rabbi Gershon Shaul Yom Tov Lipman HaLevi Heller Wallerstein at age 18 was appointed dayan in Prague at the beit din of his rabbi, the Maharal, where he served for around 28 years. In 1627 he returned to Prague and became the rabbi of the city, but he didn’t serve there for long. His enemies slandered him before the emperor Ferdinand II and accused him of libeling the Habsburg family and attacking Christianity in his writings. In 1629 he was imprisoned and indicted for breaking the orders of the Pope to burn the Talmud Bavli (he instead published a copy). The court ordered him to be executed, but after appeals the emperor took pity on him and released him in exchange for a heavy fine and limits to his activities. The day of his imprisonment, the 5th of Tammuz, was made a fast day for his descendants. Until today, many of his descendants continue this tradition. The story of his imprisonment was collected by the Tosafot Yom Tov in the megillah called “MegillatEiva.” He named it after a verse in MegillatEicha.”
