My Glorious Brothers. First Edition, 1948
First English edition of Howard Fast’s work. Rare, 1948. The book, published at the height of the War of Independence, is an epic tale regarding the Maccabean revolt, from the perspective of Shimon HaNasi, and written as a scroll presented to the Roman senate. Dedicated to ‘all those out there, Jews and non-Jews, who gave their lives for the same ancient, unfinished battle for human freedom and respect.’ It was published in 1948, after an aerial trip by Fast over the earth. The book evoked opposition amongst the communist party of which the author was a member, because they worried that it displayed support for Zionism. The book was translated into Hebrew and other languages. It was very popular in Israel and was made into a play. Howard Fast (1914-2003) was an American, Jewish author and screenplay writer who was persecuted by the United State government. He was interrogated and imprisoned because of his communist beliefs. He was greatly adored in the Soviet Union – other than this book which was not well received. 280 pages, first edition, rare, not in the National Library. Very fine condition.
