Novella on Masechta Brochos, Shabbos, Horiyos and Chulin by R. Chaim Ben Attar, the Ohr HaChaim Ha’Kodosh.
The Ohr Ha’Chaim Ha’Kodosh wrote and published this sefer as a young man. In the introduction he writes of his way of learning; first trying to understand the Talmud without using the commentaries. Only later did he refer to the Rishonim and Achronim and often found that he deduced similar interpretations. In Parshas Yisro of his commentary on Chumash, the Ohr Ha’Chaim writes “see how I explained this topic in my work Cheifetz HaShem which I wrote as a child”.
The seforim of the Ohr Ha’Chaim Ha’Kodosh were received to almost unprecedented acclaim, particularly among Chassidim and Mekubolim. The CHIDA in Shem HaGedolim writes of the great esteem that the Ba’al Shem Tov had for the Ohr Ha’Chaim Ha’Kodosh. In a famous instance, R. Chaim Halberstam (Divrei Chaim) wrote, that an individual who does not believe that the Ohr Ha’Chaim Ha’Kodosh was written with Ruach Ha’Kodesh is to be considered a heretic.
R. Chaim Ibn Attar (1696-1743), was born in Morocco and was one of its most prominent Rabbonim. In 1733, he decided to emigrate to Eretz Yisroel. En route, he stopped in Livorno where the rich members of the community pleaded for him to stay and established a Yeshiva for him. In 1742, he arrived in Yerusholayim where he became Rav of the Knesses Yisroel Shul. His most famous student was R. Chaim Dovid Azulai (CHIDA). He is buried on Har Ha’Zesim and there are countless accounts of miraculous divine assistance, after praying at his Kever.

R. Yackov Ha'Levy Lipchitz served as a Rav in Kovno and was a close confidant of R. Yitzchock Elchonon Spektor whom he assisted in Kovno Rabbinate. Author of Sefer Zichron Yackov.
