Booklet about the Haredi Settlement 'Nachalat Ya'akov' in Emek Yizrael, headed by the Rebbe of Yavlona - Jerusalem 1926 - Special Photos of the Rebbe and the Settlers
Hebrew booklet named "The Hassidim Immigrated to the Land of Israel" - the settlement of the Yavlona and Kuznitz Hassidim in Emek Yizrael (in the Nachalat Ya'akov and Avodat Yisrael settlements): Revolution and Constrction..
Before us is the only booklet from that period about the settlements 'Nachalat Ya'akov' and 'Avodat Yisrael' which existed for two years only. Similar editions in German and Yiddish were printed the same year in Vienna. They were published by the Central Office of the Jewish National Fund.
On the front cover of the booklet there is a picture of the founders of 'Nachalat Ya'akov', the Rebbe of Yavlona and his Hassidim holding spades and shovels in the young settlement. The title page contains a photograph of the settlement.
The booklet contains an essay about life in the settlement by Reb Binyamin (Yehoshua Redler-Feldman), who visited the settlement several times, once within the framework of the famous rabbis' visit together with Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Ha'Cohen Kook and Rabbi Ya'akov Meir.
Throughout the booklet, there are nice pictures of life in the settlement including a picture of a carriage with the Rebbe and a few Hassidim; building houses; drying out the swamps; a woman making dough at the bakery; working in the fields; a playground with improvised recreational equipment; studying at the Beit Midrash; the Hassidim's wives milking cows; a large picture of Avraham Melink (one of the founders of Kefar Chassidim) - a picturesque image of a Hebrew worker with a beard, work tools and work clothes…
The Rebbe of Yavlona, Rabbi Yechezkel Taub (1892-1986) founded for his Hassidim the 'Nachalat Ya'akov' Group. The Rebbe of Kuznitz founded the 'Avodat Yisrael' Group. In March 1924 the first settlers of these two groups arrived in Israel. In April 1925, the members of Nachalat Yitzchak settled in three places: Sheikh Abrek, Charatiya and Charbaj (Kefar Chassidim of today). The Hassidim started to work with great enthusiasm.
This Aliya aroused great interest in the Jewish world - a unique phenomenon of the immigration of a Hassidic group in a period when most Hassidim objected to Zionism. The Hassidic settlements received much sympathy and many distinguished people visited them such as the Chief Rabbis, Rabbi Kook and Rabbi Uziel. Many intellectuals, writers and philosophers also came to see the miracle.
Due to inexperience, the economic crisis in Israel and Poland and unsuccessful planning of the settlement experts, the Hassidim failed to meet the expectations and were unable to sustain themselves. Despite their great desire to realize their dream, they were on the brink of poverty. So, after great suffering, the two settlements were abandoned.
In 1927, the settlement was re-established in its present form and was given a new name: Kefar Chassidim.
