The Earliest Hebrew Advertisement of the "Carmel Mizrachi" Winery [the Only Copy in the World?] - The Ottoman Period - Rishon Le'Zion, 1906
An important booklet that was printed most likely in 1906. It should be noted that this early booklet is bibliographically unknown. Most likely that before us is the only copy in the world!
According to the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book, the first advertisement of Carmel Mizrachi is from 1927[!], twenty years later than the booklet before us. In the National Library, the earliest Hebrew advertisements are from 1908 and they are about the regulations of the Winery and other legal matters and not its excellent products.
Thus, this is most likely the earliest Hebrew advertisement of 'Carmel Mizrachi' and definitely the earliest advertisement, from the Ottoman Period, before World War I, to be seen in auctions.

Description of the booklet
The booklet contains seven pages beside the title page.
The title page is decorated, with an illustration of both sides of a "Gold Medal" the Winery had received in 1900. On the lower part of the title page, it is written that Winery is under the supervision of the Rabbi of Jaffa, that is Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Ha'Cohen Kook, the future Chief Rabbi of the Land of Israel.
On the page after the title page, a French list of 'certificates of the expert professors' and the medals the Winery had received in the years 1897, 1900 and 1906.
On the next page there is a list of wines and beverages that are produced by the Winery and their prices: red wine, old wine, white wine, Cognac, Arak, liqueur and several other beverages that are kept in barrels.
At the end of the list, there is an interesting piece of information, which was written in large letters: "We take the empty bottles back at the price we sold them to the customer".
On the back cover, there is a French list of "our barns all over the world": England, Turkey, America and Europe.
The booklet was printed by the well-known Elazar Menachem Goldberg (whose printing press was founded in 1900).
The year of its printing does not appear in the booklet. The latest year that is referred to (in the context of the medals the Winery had received) is 1906. The next medals the Winery had received are not mentioned. The printing press which printed the booklet closed down in 1914. Thus, the booklet was printed during those years, most likely in 1906.
10x13 cm.
Background on Carmel Mizrachi
During those years, wine was the leading agricultural product of the Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel. In the Moshava Rishon Le'Zion, a large winery was built by the Baron Rothschild in 1890. The name 'Carmel Mizrachi' Winery was given to the winery in 1902. At the height of its activity, the Winery exported wines ("Carmel Warsaw", "Carmel Odessa" and more). Many workers, members of the first and second Aliyot , worked in the winery, David Ben Gurion being one of them. The Winery had gone through many changes; yet is still operative. Today, the product of 'Carmel Winery' constitutes 70% of the wine and hard liqueurs export.
