The letter bears a very attractive vignette to the heading, above the printed title ''Repubblica Cisalpina'', showing the word ''Cisalpina crossed, and hand-written above ''Italiana''. The Cisalpine Republic had been converted into Italian Republic a few months earlier. About VG £100-150 The Cisalpine Republic was a sister republic of France in Northern Italy which lasted from May 1797 to January 1802 when the Extraordinary Cisalpine Consulta decided to change the name of the State to the Italian Republic. On 26th January Bonaparte appeared in the College of la TrinitŽ of Lyon, attended by Murat, Berthier, Louis Bonaparte, Hortense and JosŽphine de Beauharnais, and heard the assembled notables proclaim the Italian Republic. On 10th February, the new constitutional government was proclaimed in Milan, and the same day, the Gregorian calendar was restored.
