LA COMMISSION POPULAIRE: Rare L.S., by the three members of the Commission Populaire, one page, 4to, Paris, 12th July 1794, to the Revolutionary Committee of Mante, in French. The Commission Populaire letter bears a French Revolution vignette and is individually signed by Chapel de Livry, Loppin and Franois Trinchard, stating `..The order of arrest issued..against the here mentioned Count and Countess Dussy and their daughter.. If you get information regarding accomplices helping these people or any other against revolutionÉ Be exact and report.« The present letter was signed only two weeks before Robespierre«s fall and the suppression of the Commission Populaire. VG £200-300 The Commission Populaire was created by the Public Saftey Committee and Robespierre on 30th April 1794. The purpose of the Commission Populaire was to judge all the enemies of the Republic. 595 persons were judged by the Commission Populaire, and 332 sentenced to death and executed. On 31st July 1794 the Public Safety Committee decided to suppress the Commission Populaire. Franois Trinchard was President of the Commission Populaire. He was arrested and judged together with Fouquier-Tinville and was discharged. Trinchard was one of the jury members to the trial of Marie Antoinette, declaring the Empress guilty of depletion of the National Treasury and high treason and sentenced to death. In October 1793 Trinchard wrote `I have been one of the juries who tried the fierce beast which has devoured a large part of the Republic..«
