Rabbi Eliyahu Kletzkin
Rabbi Eliyahu Kletzkin (1852-1932) was a great genius. He authored approximately ten bools, most of them responsa and novellae on the Talmud. He authored his first composition when he was only 13, a composition than amazed its readers. When he was a young yeshiva student, his father-in-law gave him a special room in his house to study and put a guard outside its door so that no one will disturb him. When prominent rabbis came to town, he would permit them to meet the boy. Among the most prominent rabbis who studied Torah with the boy was the Maharil Diskin. He was highly praised by the Malbim when he was 23 years old.
The geniuses of the generation, Rabbi Meir Arik and Rabbi Simcha Zelig Rieger of Brisk among them, awaited his rulings on questions regarding Agunot, after World War I. Especially after the death of Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor (in 1896) he started receiving halachic questions from all over the world and many relied on his responses.
His great love of the Land of Isreal led him to give up his position as the rabbi of Lublin and immigrate to the Land of israel, although the economic situation there was very difficult at the time. A short while after he arrived in Jerusalem, Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld appointed him to head the 'Ohel Moshe' Yeshiva, replacing Rabbi Yitzchak Yerucham Diskin who had died previously that year. The members of Agudat Yisrael considered Rabbi Eliyahu as the most senior Posek of Jerusalem.
He died in 1932 and was buried on the Mount of Olives, close to the garves of Rabbi Yitzchak Yerucham Diskin and Rabbi Chaim Berlin.
