Letter from Yehuda Leib Gordon to Moshe Montefiore

Long and interesting letter by Yehuda Leib Gordon of the Jewish Enlightenment to Sir Moses Montefiore of 1872.

Specifications: [1] page, paper. 21X26 cm.

Yehuda Leib Gordon (1830-1892) was one of the greatest Hebrew poets of the Jewish Enlightenment. He was amongst the biggest opponents of the rabbis of his time, contending with their strictness and their stance on the Orthodox woman. Through these struggles he became known as the father of secular Judaism. Gordon was one of the most productive writers of his time. He published several books, as well as dozens of articles for the press.

Unique Features: In his letter, Gordon mentions the poem he published in honor of Montefiore in the Maggid newspaper [1871, issue 41]. He continues to ask Montefiore to accept the title "Honorary Supervisory Member" of the organization which disseminates the Enlightenment in Russia, of which he had just begun to serve as head, since Montefiore himself said "the enhancement of our brother's status in our country depends on the level of their education and their closeness to wisdom and knowledge, and this is also the purpose and goal of our society."

Condition: Fine condition. Fold marks with small tear along fold line.
