Postcards with a black-and-white reproduction of the illustrations of the painter Pesach Irsai from the time he was a prisoner at Bergen-Belsen Camp during his rescue by the Kastner Train
Pesach Istvan Irsai (1896-1968) grew up in Budapest, Hungary. He served as a junior officer during World War I and won a Bravery Medal and four other medals. After studying architecture, he started combing his work as a graphic designer with his Zionist activity. Among others, he designed the 'Chaim' font, the first modern Hebrew font. He immigrated to Israel in 1925 and designed posters for the newspapers of the time. After four years, he returned to Hungary and became a famous designer. In 1944, he joined the famous Kastner Train. The agreement with Eichmann had been that for money, the train will travel to the Swiss border. However, in fact, the Germans led the train to Bergen-Belsen. Only several months later, when the Germans received additional money, could the Jews continue their journey to Switzerland. During his stay in Bergen-Belsen, Irsai painted the daily life of the camp and some of these illustrations were published as a series of postcards.
