DISRAELI BENJAMIN: (1804-1881) British Prime Minister 1874-80. Two excellent A.Ls.S., by Disraeli, the first signed `Beaconsfield´, three pages, 8vo, Whitehall Gardens, [London], 16th February 1877, on the black-bordered Whitehall printed stationery, to J.G. Hubbard. Disraeli, as Prime Minister, states in full `I have never thanked you for your Caviare = but I am not ungrateful. It was not ''caviar to the General'' with me, for I highly appreciate it, & yours, is of the highest quality.´ And concludes with a significant sentence saying `How are you getting on in the House of Commons? My life is now easier. I know I am dead but I have the consolation of being in the Elysian fields.´ A letter of good content; the second signed `B. Disraeli´, four pages, 8vo, Hughenden Manor [Buckinghamshire], 3rd September 1862, on his personal printed stationery, to J.G. Hubbard. Disraeli states in part `I was unable to reply to your kind letter yesterday, as my prospect of attending the dinner at Buckingham was uncertain…´ Folded, VG, 2 £400-600 John G. Hubbard (1805-1889) First Baron Addington. British member of the Parliament for Buckingham 1859-68, and for the City of London 1874-87. Served in the House of Lords until his death. Disraeli quotes Shakespeare´s Hamlet when saying ''caviar to the General'', a good thing unappreciated by the ignorant. The Elysian Fields was the final resting place of the souls of the heroic and the virtuous in Greek mythology. Some months before the present letter was written, London newspapers announced `The Queen has been pleased to summon the Prime Minister to the House of Lords as Earl of Beaconsfield´, Disraeli had served in the House of Commons since 1837.
