Robert Piesen (August 11, 1921 Jindřichův Hradec, Czechoslovakia - January 20, 1977 Haifa, Israel) was a Czech painter.
He was born on August 11, 1921 in Jindřichův Hradec as the second son of Richard and Emilie Piesen. His father Richard Piesen (1877–1937) was a graduate of the University of Vienna (doctorate in chemistry and philosophy). He came from a Jewish family that allegedly immigrated to Bohemia in the 19th century from Spain. He owned a factory for artificial fertilizers in Jindřichův Hradec. His mother Emilie, née Matoušková (1899–1950), came from a Catholic family. Before the wedding, she converted to the Jewish faith. Robert Piesen had a congenital heart defect.
Piesen's parents divorced and Robert moved to Brno with his father and brother. After graduating from a burgher school (1933–1936), he studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Brno with Professor František Václav Süsser (1936–1940). After two years of preparation, he studied graphic specialization.
During the occupation, he tried to escape deportation to a concentration camp. At first he lived in sublets, which he often changed. He later obtained false documents and in 1942 was totally deployed in Berlin. Here he worked at Deutsche Verlag. But he also had to work on clearing debris after air raids. These experiences affected him for life. He was one of three family members who survived World War II.
After the war, he stayed in Brno for a short time, but then settled in Prague. Here he met his lifelong partner Pavla Mautnerová, his later friend Richard Fremund and the artists Karel Černý, Jiří Martin, Vojta Nolč, Libor Fára. In 1957 he had his first solo exhibition at the Youth Gallery in Prague. In the same year he participated in the exhibition of the group May 57 in the Municipal House. In 1962 he took part in the confrontational exhibition Arguments I in the Krzywe Kolo Gallery in Warsaw (he also participated with him: Jiří Balcar, Vladimír Boudník, Josef Istler, Jan Koblasa, Mikuláš Medek, Aleš Veselý). In 1963, he acquired a studio in Nusle, where he created a large number of his major works in the next two years.
In January 1965 he went to Zurich to take part in an international exhibition at the Bürdecke Gallery. He did not return to Czechoslovakia and emigrated. He went first to Vienna and then to Israel. Here he settled together with Pavla Mautnerová in the art village of Ein Hod. In 1966, his friend, Dr. Misch Siebeld, managed to organize a unique heart operation for him.
He died of a heart attack on January 20, 1977 during the preparation of an exhibition in Jerusalem and is buried in Haifa.
