The First Page of 'Davar', the Assassination of Himmler – 1944

The first page of the 'Davar' Newspaper, 23.10.1944, whose headline is "The Assassination of Himmler in Budapest" after he arrived there "to try and control the situation". An item from Stockholm announced that "Himmler, the supreme commander of Hitler's army "rests" now, after the information had arrived yesterday about the assassination attempt in Budapest. The initial information about his death has not been confirmed. Now it is said that he has only been wounded…"
Heinrich Himmler was the strongest man in Nazi Germany after Hitler himself. He headed the SS and the Gestapo. He ordered the murder of six million Jews and led to the death of millions from other nations. After the war, he hid, yet was caught by the Allies. A day after he was caught, he committed suicide.
Unfortunately, the dramatic assassination attempt described in the newspaper before us did not succeed. However, it undoubtedly was one of the first signs of the crumbling of the Nazi Rule in Germany.
